How to make the most of your Instagram

How to make the most of your Instagram

So lets start at the beginning.

Instagram for those of us who know little if not anything about it was launched in 2010.  It is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables you to take pictures and videos, and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well as through other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.  (Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 for a whopping $1 billion!).

So what is an Algorithm?  For a computer to do anything you have to write a computer program.  To write a program, you have to tell the computer exactly what you want it to do, step by step.  The computer then "executes" the  program, following each step mechanically.  When you tell the computer what to do, you also get to choose how its going to do it.  Hence, Algorithm.  The algorithm is the basic technique used to get the job done.  (Hope you are still with me!).

So why use Instagram?  Used correctly, Instagram can be a highly-targeted, visual advertising channel for your business.  Like any social network, there are right ways to use it, wrong ways to use it, and clever ways to use it.  The most successful strategy overall is to be authentic and social.  Businesses can use this platform as away to showcase their product and services in a rich, visual context.

On March 16, Instagram posted plans that they would be moving away from showing posts in strict reverse chronological order, and instead boost those based on the "likelihood you'll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting, and the timeliness of the post".  So all posts are still there, just in a different order!

If this new set up has your worried or concerned, here a a few helpful tips (I hope!).

How to increase your visibility:

Become ACTIVE - engage with your social media followers more.  If they like your photos, you like their photos.  If they comment on your photos, you need to reply to them and thank them.  Build a relationship with them so that they continue to like you and continue to follow you.  The more likes you get the more likely they will see your photos in their news feed.

REVIEW your most successful posts and then replicate them!  Be strategic about what you post, look at your most popular posts, review the similarities between them and then create a similar content. This will help you to create a strategy that will enable you to withstand this change in algorithm and keep the followers engaged.  YES.

Take advantage of your CAPTION - Say something like "I love this book / product", what do you think"?   This gives them an opportunity to comment on your photo.  The more comments, likes, the more activity on your photos will translate to their feed.  Instagram will then see that hey this person likes your photos and they will then see your posts in their feed more often.  Or should you have a website:- "I love this book / product", what do you think"? click the link in our profile to see full details.  This gets people off the platform and on to your website.

#HASHTAGS - You can have up to 30 #hashtags.  My suggestion to you is to add 1 to 2 #hashtags in your caption, add them into your sentence for example "Out driving in my new #audiA3convertable, enjoying #splendidsun" (I wish).  This gets your message across to followers, but its not going to be lost in a whole bunch of #hashtags.  Make sure the #hashtags you use relate to your business. your location and industry.

Incorporate TRENDING topics in your posts, i.e. Waterford Hurlers!!

Use short VIDEOS, record a company promotional day, a behind the scenes video, a summer barbecue, the Christmas party (maybe not!).  Keep them short and remember when you post them to add as many relevant hashtags as you can to spread the reach of your video.

Introducing Video on Instagram from Instagram on Vimeo.

Make sure your Instagram page is PUBLIC.  If its not Public, no ones is going to see it.

My message to you is - your creativity and knowledge can drive success no matter.

Are You Stuck For An Idea?

Are You Stuck For An Idea?
Innovation is key in Business. Without new innovations businesses would suffer greatly and would most likely be left behind in our fast paced society

Many small companies feel that innovation is for much greater and larger corporations, but what they must remember is that those large companies began as small business who just started with a new innovation which led them to be the huge, successful corporations that they are today. However, what small companies must remember is that they have the upper hand on many of the larger corporations. Smaller businesses have more contact with their customers and would have a better idea of what they need and want. Smaller organisations can make decisions much quickly than larger business which means that they can get their ideas out onto the market first and small business can develop a team culture which allows everyone to get involved in innovation, however larger businesses would be unable to do this as there are too many employees.

A great example of a small company who came up with a brilliant idea would be “Snapchat”. Snapchat is a photo messaging app which is now a multi-billion corporation, however at the start they were just a small company who came up with a new idea. When they became popular Facebook tried to buy the company but the owners of Snapchat refused to sell. This led Facebook to create their own photo messaging app, however their app didn’t take off and it ultimately failed. This example proves that smaller companies can rise up and inevitably become one of the world’s most popular and powerful companies.

The “Idea Factory” is a company which helps business to develop and to think of new innovations which will help businesses to grow and succeed. The company was established by Joe Fitzgerald who has studied innovation at MIT and Harvard and Michael Cagney who has over thirty years’ experience as a manager in HR, Finance and Operations. They offer many services at the “Idea Factory” such as, idea generation, innovation training, creative training, innovation consulting, facilitation and workshops. They believe in the innovation funnel, that is if one idea is launched that many more will come. Their ultimate goal is to help business succeed.

On Wednesday the 22nd of June the owners of the “Idea Factory” are coming to the Dungarvan Enterprise Centre to speak about innovation. The seminar is free and all are welcome.

Currently studying Business in Cork Institute of Technology going into my 2nd year. For the summer I am volunteering at Dungarvan Enterprise Centre.

Blitz Your To-Do-List By Working Smarter!

The humble to-do-list is an irreplaceable crutch in today’s hectic society. We use it as a reference point throughout our daily lives and it helps us to feel that we have things under control. Sometimes though, as our lives become busier our to-to-lists become correspondingly cluttered. This can damage productivity as well as morale and render the usually invaluable to-do-list counter-productive. Here are ten practical, fun and easy-to-implement ways you can get the most out of your to-do-list and maximise your productivity.

1.       Separate your work and personal to-do-lists.

It might sound obvious, but you shouldn't be spending your working hours fretting about the week’s shopping and whether or not your cat would prefer lamb-flavoured treats this week instead of salmon (for the record, always err on the side of salmon!). But neither should you be spending your precious wind-down time at home agonizing over looming work deadlines. We all know we COULD be doing more, but you’ll find yourself less overwhelmed and more productive- both at work and at home- if you separate the two and focus on them one at a time. The first step in doing this is to keep your personal and work to-do-lists physically separate from each other. Try, for example, keeping your personal to-do-lists in hard copy, like in a pocket-book or diary, and keep your work to-do-list in easily accessible digital form- speaking of which…

2.       Choose a to-do-list app or tool that works for you.

There exists, fortunately, an array of handy to-do-list tools and apps, many of which you can sync across all your devices, so you can instantly access your work to-do list wherever and whenever you need to. ToodleDo, for example, is a free task management tool which is very user-friendly and boasts several useful features. The Scheduler is one such feature. You can create a hotlist of your highest priority items, and so if you find yourself with a chunk of free time, ToodleDo can identify the highest priority task that fits into the available time slot. If that’s not what you’re looking for, here is a list of other tools and apps which might fit your needs. Whatever you end up with, make sure it's easy to use. The quicker you can add and remove tasks, the more time you'll actually spend doing them!

3.       Batch similar tasks in the same time-frame.

We all know how disorientating it can be when you suddenly shift from, say, summarising a report to doing online research, and even a few minutes spent “getting into” each different task can amount over weeks or months to an awful lot of wasted time. One study by the American Psychological Association found that constantly switching between tasks causes temporary mental barriers which can deplete our productivity by as much as 40%. So, instead of completing your tasks in chronological order, consider “batch-processing”. This means batching together similar tasks such as scheduling posts on social media and writing up promotional material such as blog posts. Start by paying attention to which tasks may be damaging your overall productivity and try organizing them into groups with their own time slots. Consider taking a short break between each batch, which will help revitalize you and clear your head of one set of tasks before you embark on another!

4.       Physically remove distractions.

While we’re on the subject of shifting your focus between tasks, it’s worth noting that unnecessary interruptions such as phone calls, notifications, excess noise and disturbances in the office can be detrimental to getting work done. Gloria Mark of the University of California, Irvine found that a typical office worker gets only about 11 minutes of work done between each interruption, while it takes an average of 25 minutes to return to the original task after an interruption, which is alarming to say the least! Interruptions are part and parcel of office life and there is only so much we can do to
minimize distractions, but we can start by removing those that are not necessary to work, such as mobile phones where any calls, texts or notifications will be personal and can be dealt with later. Try setting your phone to airplane mode when you are in work, or keep it in your bag while you are working. Similarly, it’s worthwhile to keep your desk clear and uncluttered and to remove any object that you find distracting. Suppose you have a habit of straightening or flicking through papers on your desk? Keep them in a folder instead and put them away until you need them.

5.       Set blocks of time in which to complete tasks.

Speaking of interruptions, it’s a good idea when you have an important project that needs to be done to literally reserve a block of time on your online calendar for that task. It means others will know not to interrupt you during that time and you can work for long stretches without being disturbed. Need to do some last-minute prep for a presentation at 4 p.m.? Block 1-2 hours in the morning or after lunch so no one bothers you during that time. Need to do some research before an important call? Block the half hour before the call starts. Do you feel you have to answer every call right when it comes in? Set aside time blocks to deal with non-urgent calls, and let your voice mail tell callers when they can expect to hear from you.

6.       Write out your to-do-list the day before.

This is a good idea for several reasons. First and foremost, and before you even get into the office, knowing that you have everything organised for tomorrow will help you get a good night’s sleep tonight. Studies have shown that when we lose just one night’s sleep, our cognitive capacity is roughly the same as being over the alcohol limit- not ideal for productivity. Secondly, you’ll be able to get right to work first thing in the morning, kick-starting your day. Also, planning out your day in
advance can help you spot obstacles ahead of time. You’ll get so much done during the day that you can afford to spend a few minutes at the end of each work day looking over your calendar and compiling your to-do-list for tomorrow!

7.      Work in “sprints”.

There have been several studies on the benefits of working in “sprints”- working intensely for short periods of time with breaks in between. Tony Schwartz, an engagement consultant who's worked with the likes of Google, Facebook, and Coca-Cola, makes an intuitive argument: that since quality work requires focus, and you only have the energy to focus for so long, you need to be conscious of how and when you focus in order to do your best work. Your mental energy is a renewable resource. It doesn't refresh on its’ own. Aside from that, your time away from work allows you to prioritize, so that when you do get to work, you know exactly what needs to be done.  This step outside the box allows you to differentiate between minutia and the real actions that will get you closer to accomplishing your important tasks. The Pomodoro Technique is a productivity-boosting technique developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 80’s that can help you concentrate for longer periods, avoid distractions, maintain higher energy throughout the day, and lower your stress levels. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals,
traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. These intervals are called pomodoros, which is Italian for tomato (named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a university student!). The method is based on the idea that frequent breaks can improve mental agility.

8.      Reward yourself!

For a variety of reasons, sometimes breaks alone are just not enough to motivate you to keep focused. In any case, a rigid system can get boring, so shake things up by allowing yourself rewards! Try, for example, allowing yourself a coffee break with a co-worker or a snack after you've knocked a set amount of items off your to-do-list. Shake things up a little and try to vary your rewards week by week, as well as setting rewards that are proportionate to the intensity of the work you have done. Not only will this obviously help motivate you to complete tasks, but it will also reward your overall mental health by not allowing your work days to become too gruelling and monotonous. You can implement the work/reward system on both a small level and a larger one- small rewards on a day-to-day basis as well as planning larger rewards for the weekend when you know you have a tough week coming up. If you can get a co-worker on board, wherein both of you plan an activity together which you can partake in once you both have a set amount of work done, you can mutually keep each other accountable in a way that is fun and rewarding for both of you. A more enjoyable workplace makes individuals perform better, in almost every aspect of their lives.

9.       Share your to-do-list.

Even without the work/reward system, it’s a good idea for co-workers to keep each other accountable for work done by sharing their to-do-lists. First of all, the mere fact of having to share your to-do-list will force you to prioritize and will create a healthy amount of pressure to complete your work in a timely fashion. Living in the age of technology means that it is very easy to do this, as you probably already use collaborative project apps such as Trello or others mentioned in this article.

10.   “Gamify” your to-do-list!

Finally, a wonderful way of simultaneously putting pressure on yourself while also making your work more enjoyable- two concepts which are so often at odds with each other- is to “gamify” your work. Gamification is the application of game playing elements to non-game environments- more specifically, introducing game-playing elements into the workplace. There have been a number of studies examining the effects of gamification on employee wellbeing and productivity, with mixed results insofar as the benefits and drawbacks are concerned when applied to groups of workers. However, you can introduce elements of gamification into your individual work where practical. Try, for example, the “Dead Battery Countdown”. This is an interesting productivity trick I came across in this article. Try unplugging your laptop and resolving to complete your to-do-list, or at least a number of items from it, before the battery runs out. This is a useful trick as it creates a sense of urgency which is hard to replicate within the environment of your usual daily activities. It is also a way of gamifying your productivity, which can be invaluable in keeping you focused and working smarter.

50 must-have apps for your business

We were very excited about the article written by Adrian Weckler, Technical editor from Irish Independent, on ''50 must-have apps for your business'' and we  decided to share a little about it.

Smartphones are not just good looking gadgets, in this article Adrian Weckler  recommends the most useful apps for your business.

These are some examples of useful apps and why you need them:

  • DocuSign it's been 15 years since 'Digital signatures' were first  flagged in Ireland. But it's still not working for business most Irish institutions still look for faxed responses to signature-specific documents. DocuSign allows you to capture your signature and use it for online documents.
  • Evernote  another good app you should have on your smartphone - it works right across  most devices. On this app you can access all of your notes, memos and documents (from years back, too).
  • Fiverr One of the trickiest bits of starting your own business is getting small professional services done. Fiverr is like the eBay of service-provides. From artwork to design to voiceovers to other business services, this has lots available at reasonable prices.
  • mSecure app is very clever and it help you keep one password which allows you entry into an online 'safety vault ' where you store other passwords.
  • Hangouts this app is probably one of Google's most underused (and underrated) free features. It lets you hold impromptu conferencing sessions, either social or professional in nature, using your phone, tablet or PC. Up to 10 people can participate on the same Hangout call.
  • Wifi finder is a very handy app when you travel and you need internet, this app shows you a bucketful of public wifi hotspots in your immediate vicinity
  • Viber  allows you to make calls and send  messages for free  to any of your friends who use viber as well and  all you have to have is access to wifi.
  • Dropbox allows you to upload, download or access documents, photos or other files across lots of devices. It's particularly handy if you want to give lots of people access to a  collection of large files without having to email them.

Action Plan for Jobs 2015-Whats It Means for Enterprise

‘’Action Plan for Jobs 2015 – What It Means for Enterprise ‘’

The Action Plan for Jobs 2015 was launched a Thursday 30.01.2015 but what does it mean for Enterprise ?

According to OECD  "the achievement of 100,000 additional jobs by 2016 will be an important milestone and we are confident that this will be achieved. Beyond this, we need to set an even more challenging goal for the country – we want to replace all of the jobs lost during the economic crisis and bring employment to 2.1 million in 2018."

They say that  Action Plan for Jobs 2015 will be a further step along the way in meeting this medium-term goal for Ireland.

The themes in this year’s Action Plan for Jobs build on the reforms of previous years in the areas of competitiveness, innovation and entrepreneurship and in fostering new sources of growth for the economy.
A significant regional fund of up to €25 million in competitive funding will be announced to support regional initiatives through Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and the LEOs, in particular.
The key target contained in the plan is to double the jobs impact of start-ups in Ireland over the next five years, from the current level of 93,000.

  • ·         Increase the number of starts –ups by  25 per cent – representing 3,000 more start-ups per annum;
  • ·         Increase the survival rate in the first five years by 25 per cent – 1,800 more survivors per annum; and
  • ·         Improve the capacity of start-ups to grow to scale by 25 per cent

To achieve the ambition, the Government will improve the key interlocking elements that impact on entrepreneurship and make up the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Ireland like a business environment and supports. In addition over the coming year, the Government will bring forward a new Enterprise Policy and Strategy Statement for the period to 2025, setting out the vision for enterprise development over that period to secure full employment, and the key supports and business environment measures to be taken to ensure Irish based enterprises are among the most innovative, productive, competitive and entrepreneurial in the world.

Very good news for Small Business

The digital economy represents 5 per cent of GDP, is growing at approximately 20 per cent per year and supports almost 100,000 direct and indirect jobs. Irish consumers spend around €700,000 per hour, 24 hours a day online. With up to 70 per cent of Ireland's annual online spend currently going overseas, targeting Irish businesses for online trading is a key jobs and economic imperative. In Ireland today, however, less than 1 in 4 small businesses are selling to customers online.

European Commission research suggests that companies which develop a meaningful online trading presence grow twice as fast, export twice as much and employ twice as many people.

The Trading Online Voucher Scheme was introduced and piloted under the 2013 Action Plan for Jobs and rolled out nationally under the 2014 Action Plan. The Scheme is a key action under the National Digital Strategy (NDS) which was published in July 2013. It aims to get 2,000 more small businesses trading online by end 2015 and offers a financial incentive of up to €2,500 to small and micro businesses to develop their online trading capability. It is an example of an effective partnership between DCENR, DJEI, Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) network.
More information on the Scheme can be found at www.dcenr.gov.ie/nds and on the website of each LEO.

Other Supports
  •  The development of an innovative SME State Support On-line tool (www.localenterprise.ie/smeonlinetool) to provide an individual with a list of the possible government business supports available to their particular business;
  • Government agreement to amend the Credit Guarantee Act 2012 and introduce a new more flexible Credit Guarantee Scheme;
  • The commitment by EI of €99.5 million to a number of funds under its Seed and Venture Capital Scheme (2013-2018);
Each LEO will identify how it can facilitate hubs where start-ups can be established in a supportive network before moving on to accommodate for the next cohort of emerging enterprises. A key approach will be to build on the 100+ Community Enterprise Centres across the country by implementing local protocols to ensure the LEOs are fully integrated into the enterprise development plans of each county.

A national week of events promoting entrepreneurship and showcasing Ireland’s start-up sector to entrepreneurs from all over the globe including the Irish diaspora, with the message ‘Start, Scale, Succeed from Ireland’.

  • ‘The Start-up Gathering’ is a new initiative which will be led by the not-for-profit organisation Start-up Ireland as a key building block towards making Ireland a global start-up hub by 2020.
  • The Start-up Gathering is an ambitious project which at its heart is ‘of the start-up sector, by the start-up sector and for the start-up sector in Ireland’.
It builds on the success of initiatives such as ‘The Gathering’ and ‘The Wild Atlantic Way’ in a sustainable, regionally balanced way. To help make Ireland the best place in the world to establish/locate a high impact start-up, five days of events will take place annually in the second week of October (from October 5th to 10th in 2015) in each of Ireland’s cities (Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford) with a focus on the industry strengths present in each city. Using the successful model of ‘The Gathering’ the week will leverage and augment many existing events and projects that are themed around entrepreneurship, start-ups and existing industry clusters present in each city.

The five industries will be those ‘strength in depth’ sectors currently located in Ireland namely ICT, Medical Devices, BioPharma, Agri/Food and Business Services.

The goal for the Start-up Gathering 2015 is to facilitate in excess of 50 events and networking opportunities nationally during the week for at least 15,000 members of the Irish public and international visitors thereby creating the conditions for the creation of at least 2,500 new jobs in the following 12 months.

It seems that the Government will support small business but whether it meets its lofty targets remains to be seen.
